Background

With the gradual shift in temperatures across the globe, Arctic and Antarctic maritime shipping lanes that had been frozen over for significant periods of time in the years, decades, and centuries of history prior are now becoming increasingly accessible year-round. This has led to a unique and unprecedented surge in international interest and investment into these regions to capitalize on newfound opportunity in integrating shorter passages for trade, transport, tourism, prospecting, scientific discovery, state security, and much more. However, while the extent in ice coverage and thickness in these regions is diminishing, the risk in navigating through them is still ever-present.

Challenge

Successful navigation of polar maritime shipping lanes today heavily depends on our ability to identify the presence and thickness of pack ice to best inform captains and their crews of if their vessel can sustain the voyage and along which route(s). Systems to aid in this process already exist, but they either use outdated techniques less accurate than the latest state of the art, don't provide or work with a live-feed of data, critical for detecting rogue obstacles or sheets of ice, or they display their information in a convoluted and/or inconvenient UI.
